CPAP not really worked

I have used CPAP for over 30 years and it's never improved my daytime drowsiness despite also taking Modafinil. When I use it for a long period I feel worse and come off it for as while. I use a Resmed Lumis 150 with a nasal mask and a humidifier and have tried all mask types. My sleep is monitored by the NHS who inform me there is a significant reduction in my apneas but I don't feel any improvement. My wife finds CPAP reduces the snoring but this is replaced by hissing and gurgling noises but I can't understand why the data is is not impacted by these noises. When I use CPAP I wake up with heavy catarrh and I am sometimes woken by what seems like something snapping at the back of my throat. Its difficult to to describe but it feels like there is an air blockage despite the reduction in apneas. I would be grateful for any of your thoughts

  1. Hi . It must be super frustrating to get no relief after all those years. Have you considered getting a second opinion or maybe seeing a gastroenterologist to be sure it's not a growth or deformity in your esophagus? This article discusses the types of sleep apnea: https://sleepapnea.sleep-disorders.net/types. As you can see, they are many potential causes for obstruction. Some can be address with surgery. Here is an article that discusses those options: https://sleepapnea.sleep-disorders.net/surgery. It might be helpful to get an idea of what specifically is causing your sleep apnea. I hope this helps and that you get answers and relief. - Lori (Team Member)
