Traveling With a CPAP

What tips and advice would you have about traveling with a CPAP? Do you own a travel CPAP or just bring the one you normally use?

  1. I just travel with normal CPAP if you have the original carry care it makes it easier to pack for travel. When I fly it doesn't count towards your bags so I can keep it with me. When I get to the hotel I usually get a bottle of distilled water. I double check my bag to make sure I have all the parts, got all the way to my destination and forget the hose lol

    1. That's a bummer to hear you had forgotten to bring the hose, 😭 ; something tells me you won't let it happen again. I don't travel too often but plan to in the future. I aim to have a travel, mini-size machine with a bag where I keep my supplies, including an extension cord and a prong adapter. Some plugs have two holes, and some have three. My OCD can never be too prepared! 😝 — Cheers, — Matt G. (sleepapnea.sleep-disorders.net) Team Member.

  2. I take my regular cpap machine with me. If you are flying, be sure to carry on your cpap machine. Put a a label on it that says "medical equipment" and it will NOT count against your carry-on limit. TSA MAY open the bag and swipe the equipment, but I have never had to take it out of the bag.

    1. Also forgot always bring extension cord, perhaps a multiple plug one. You never know where the outlets will be!

    2. Excellent advice. I have one packed in my to go bag all the time for just that reason! Warmly, Lisa (SleepApnea.Sleep-Disorders.net Team Member and Advocate)

  3. — my biggest problem is a delayed flight that gets me to my destination late at night, when it’s hard to find an open store that carries distilled water.

    1. I find using a bottle of water that you can buy at Walmart or Walgreens will do the job.

  4. What tips do you have for storing your CPAP when traveling?

    1. my tip is having the original bag to store it in. I tried buying just cpap travel bag and it didn't fit machine. I ended up going on EBAY and finding a duplicate of the bag that my machine has came in originally. That bag fits the machine so it's snug but still protected. When I fly I never put it the overhead compartment and always find room for it under the seat in front of me or even on my lap if there wasn't room.
