Can’t sleep with CPAP

Hi Ron, I have similar problems. My mask isn’t comfortable and doesn’t seal right, even with the sleep specialist adjusting it. He changed it a number of times too. I toss and turn all night, trying to keep the mask on. I end up holding in place. Needless to say, I don’t sleep well when all this is going on. Usually I check the machine to see when I hit 4 hours, then I take it off to get some “real sleep”. The insurance needs to see at least 4 hours a night for 25 out of 30 days usage, or at least that was I was told. Some nights I will struggle with the fit so much that I get frustrated and pull it off.
I can’t even describe how much I hate this machine. I wish I could get the implanted one, my previous sleep doctor said my condition was too bad for it, my current one thinks I might be a candidate. Unfortunately, I saw her right before the Covid sheltering took effect, so who knows when I can see the surgeon.
My old sleep doctor, who left to work with the VA, knew how much I struggled with day time sleepiness, which using a Cpap was supposed to help with. He prescribed me a medication that is used for Narcolepsy, which allowed me to function. My new provider isn’t allowed to prescribe it, the hospital system she works for says only psychiatric or pain management doctors can prescribe it. I have both types of doctors, though not in the same system. They both refused to prescribe it. Since it was the beginning of the shelter at home, and it didn’t matter if I slept until 12-1:00; I didn’t pursue it.

I hope you can get your situation straightened out. One thing that helped me see where I was at is signing up with Res-Med to get reports of my daily usage. It tells you about mask leaks, how many times you took it off, how long it was on, etc. You can see daily use, past thirty days, and longer. I’ve printed up reports for my new doctor that showed my usage and all the other incidentals for the past year. It helps me to see where I’m at, and to let my doctor know too. Good luck.

  1. I have been using my CPAP for many years. Recently I have been having trouble with the CPAP and not getting enough sleep. I end up being very tired during the day. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi . How long have you had this same machine? There are a lot of possibilities. The machine might be too old and no longer keeping up; your needs might have changed, requiring new settings or a new machine; you might need a new mask; or this new problem might be entirely unrelated. Many people experience fatigue with age because they stop producing enough vitamin D, or don't absorb enough B vitamins or iron. Thyroid problems can also develop over time. Have you talked with both your pulmonologist and your primary care doctor about you CPAP issue and fatigue. It might be worth tackling with both doctors -- getting re-evaluated for a new machine and having a few simple blood tests to rule out nutritional deficiencies and thyroid disorders. I hope that helps. Keep us posted if you don't mind. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

  2. last night was a dandy...woke up to go to the bathroom and the hose was off the mask. Ok put it back on. Then I had 3.1 hours of sleep. I also hear air coming of the mask so I push on it so it's tight, after I have retightened the straps. AND the dry mouth (also from Rx I take for restless legs) and the lips are impressed against the teeth. I put the mask on and then check "mask fit" and it gets really tight. When you press stop, it goes back to where you started, mask is loose!!! I also would like to get Inspire....

    1. How frustrating, . Have you looked into Inspire? I hope you are a candidate. I sometimes experience dry mouth from sleeping with my mouth open. It is a terrible feeling and can lead to tooth decay. I keep a bottle of dry mouth melts on my nightstand. They help tremendously. Do you use anything to treat your dry mouth? I hope you get a better night's sleep tonight. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

  3. Thank you Patti. There sure are alot of ups and downs lately.
Switching meds has helped to make a difference already.

    1. For the record, my C-Pap and I got along quite well until this past couple of months. My docs adjusted my medications and am still adapting.
I just wanted to let you know in case you read elsewhere that I said I was great.
      Take care,

      1. I’m sorry you are having problems Janet. 🤗 It seems that there are lots of ups and downs with this disease, right? I hope your doctors and you can find a workable solution soon, and you can get back to feeling good.
