Face mask, claustrophobia, and discomfort

Hi everyone,

I’m 32 years old and was recently diagnosed with chronic obstructive sleep apnea. Like many of us, I also contend with asthma and chronic allergic rhinitis as well as anxiety.

I got my ResMed CPAP machine almost a month ago and I’m having a really hard time getting used to it. I started with a full face mask and immediately felt claustrophobic, never mind the disconcerting sensation of the air pressure. I decided to try a nasal mask, but I am a mouth breather. Every time I breathe in through my nose but our through my mouth, the moisture makes me feel like there’s something caught in my throat and I start to gag. I’ve also tried to wait to put the mask on and turn the machine on until I am very tired and sure I’m going to go to sleep soon, but as soon as I put the mask on, I’m wide awake.

I’m really determined to adjust to this machine because I know how important it is for my health, but it’s getting really frustrating and I can’t help but to feel like a failure.

Does anyone have general advise for adjusting to the therapy as well as to avoid feeling claustrophobic?

Thanks!
Clay
