Sleep apnea without low oxygen

Hello all,

My mom was diagnosed with OSA averaging 60 AHI per hour. But her average oxygen saturation was 90% which was pretty good. The doctors were surprised at that. In fact, her average oxygen after they put her on CPAP was worse at 88%.

Does OSA with out low oxygen saturation cause the same problems as regular and should it be treated differently? Thanks!

  1. It is odd that her oxygen level didn't drop much with such a high index. If her oxygen is now worse, I would suggest having the doctor look at her compliance software for information on exactly what type of apneas she is having, obstructive, or central. You didn't say if she was using an Auto-Titration machine at home. If she is that may show if some pressures are better for her than others. You really need to have a board-certified sleep specialist look at this to determine what is actually going on. So many variables that it is hard to say. Keep us informed as to what you find out.
