New to CPAP but not to OSA

I’ve just been diagnosed with OSA after a sleep test with a score of 17.3. This is not my first rodeo though, I am 67 years old and about 25 years ago I had laser surgery which removed my uvula and some other stuff, which actually made quite an improvement for many years. I’m prepared to accept this diagnosis now, but am apprehensive about using CPAP. I’m 67 years old but very fit - I ride a bike an average of 4,800 km/yr, but can’t breathe when I sleep! I’m about to be fitted with a mask and machine, and would appreciate any advice I can get about how to choose the right setup

  1. Thanks for your words of encouragement! I have been referred to a service provider and have an appointment in 2 weeks for a fitting. They allow a 30 day trial for a new user, but there are so many different options it’s almost overwhelming! I guess I’ll try just have to go trial and error like everyone else!

    1. I am glad you got an appointment, . I hope you find something comfortable quickly. Let me know how it goes if you don't mind sharing. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi . I am glad the surgery helped for so many years. That was an awfully young age for a diagnosis. As you know, it can be hard to accept a sleep apnea diagnosis when you are otherwise so healthy, but OSA doesn't discriminate. I have one relative who was diagnosed after a ministroke in his 50s. He has always been super fit (an avid biker, like you) and a healthy eater, but he definitely has sleep apnea and it likely caused the ministroke. He has been using his CPAP regularly now for at least 10 years and has had no further heart issues. My husband has had one for even longer and he can't imagine ever being without it. He sleeps so much better now and his heart health has also improved. Unfortunately, no one can really recommend the best set up for you. It will all depend on what is most comfortable for you physically and psychologically. The best place to start is with a medical supply store you can trust. They should have you try on various masks before committing you to one. They should also be willing to make another appointment and refit you if you are uncomfortable with the one you select. My husband started with the full face mask, but switched to the nasal pillow because it was more comfortable for him. Some people have to try multiple masks before they find one they can wear comfortably. Here is a wonderful article about choosing a CPAP mask that might interest you: https://sleepapnea.sleep-disorders.net/living/mask-tips-sleep-position. I hope this helps and that you find a good fit. Keep us posted if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
