Sleep Apnea Community Advocate Janet PlankJanet was previously an advocate on SleepApnea.Sleep-Disorders.net.

I was an EMT-I and working ambulance for numerous years before health changed things. First, I was diagnosed with adult asthma and allergies. In 2011, I was sent to have my sleep study.

I struggled with Sleep Apnea, because I couldn't get a mask to fit. I went to the Mayo Clinic for my COPD and they scheduled me for a sleep study with just the probe on my finger. The doctor reaffirmed my need for wearing my CPAP mask. Because I couldn't find a mask to work, he said he'd be right back. He brought an armful of masks and set them down on the table. When he found one with a "shelf" as he called it, I said I would try it. Since I am a mouth breather, this kept my mouth closed so I would have to breathe in through my nose. I have been using this type since, even though they keep offering me the new styles. This works, why fix something that isn't broke?

I am married, with 4 children, 4 step-children, 6 children-in-law, 14 grandchildren, 1 angel grandbaby and one expected in August 2020.

My heart-filled wish that I want to share with everyone: We are all on a journey of life and what a blessing to share this journey with those we meet along the way. Build memories as we go and share blessings along the way. The memories are for us to enjoy, and for those that we live to hold for the rest of their lives.
